Journeys Collaborative

offering weekly sojourns that explore the intersection of
music, movement, mindfulness and energy
Dance Journeys began in 2003 as a dancer-run collective.
Originally it had been one of the Mindful Movement classes taught by
Vinn Marti through the Body Moves studio in downtown Portland,
Oregon.
From the beginning, as now, we are a loose collective – a
"collaborative". Those of us who feel called to, we take turns
putting together a music experience for us to dance/move to for that
week. The music tends to be textural and may be somewhat slower
in tempo than many of the other ecstatic dance experiences around –
many kinds of music are fair game. Because we rotate music
responsibilities, it is different every week. Most often whoever
offers the music for that week also leads a short opening circle, where
they might speak very briefly about the inspiration for the music
journey they have created. So, if you have ever dreamed of being
a dj, this might be the place to begin – as the experience here can be
not only about dancing, but seeing how others move to what you are
inspired to play.
Although we may engage with others during the dance, these sessions
tend to be more of an inward journey, where mindfulness is key.
We close the curtains, keep the room darkened, and dance by the
candlelight of the altar. Feel free to move (or not) in ways you
feel called to – letting your body be your guide.
We open the space by 5:30pm for a self-guided meditation, and begin
warm-up time by 6:00. We hold a brief opening circle around 6:15
and then begin the dance journey. We end with a simple closing
circle around 7:30. You are welcome to arrive at any point you
can join us. New comers are always welcome.
